Think you have what it takes to be a great mentor for a child here in the Sioux Empire? Here's a chance to show your stuff.

There is about 250 kids in the area that are currently in need of a mentor and Lutheran Social Services along with the Sioux Falls School District are hoping to match them up with qualified mentors soon.

On Wednesday, April 13, 2016, 250 people who now mentor were honored during a breakfast at The District in Sioux Falls. During the ceremony, leaders asked those who already mentor to please consider mentoring again, they also challenged them to encourage other people they know to become mentors.

Terra Zahn who was named Mentor of the Year for 2016 on Wednesday, says she has been meeting with her 9-year-old mentee for the last two years at Oscar Howe Elementary School.

According to Terra, "The experience began with the two of them playing with Play Doh, but now they have started talking and have a strong bond where we can talk about deeper issues and more important things."

Being a mentor for a child can be a very rewarding experience and only requires about an hour of your time each week.

If you would like more information about becoming a mentor, contact LSS for all the details.
