Cheat Sheet Personal Finance website is a great place for all kinds of info and advice on every topic you can imagine. I thought since spring and summer in our part of the world is rummage and garage sale high season, this would be great advice to pass on.

Although in reading the list, I know plenty of people who still buy some of these items at rummage sales and most likely always will. Many of these suggestions come from the Consumer Products Safety Commission, so they should know! Right?

  1. Baby gear- That includes cribs, playpens, car seats, toys and more. It may not meet current safety and design standards and put your baby or toddler in danger.
  2. Bike helmets- The Bike Helmet Safety Institute advised you to never purchase a used one because damage may not be evident. You should always buy a new one after any accident where you hit your head and new helmets are inexpensive.
  3. Mattresses- Bed bugs. Enough said!!
  4. Non-stick cookware- Good Houskeeping says the life of a non-stick coated pan is 3 to 5 years and even thought the EPA says Teflon-coated pans are safe, you should avoid chipping and flaking non-stick cookware.
  5. Electronics- Technology evolves so quickly and prices on many items have really come down anyway. If however you are a hobbyist or love to tinker with old electronic stuff, go for it! Speakers, too, can be a good buy as they haven't changed a whole lot.
  6. Boxes of old records- Forget this one! Popular Song has no idea what they're talking about! (And, I plan to put out tons of them on my next garage sale! Records are great! Buy mine, okay?)
  7. Shoes- Again, what do these people know? I have all kinds of great shoes that were barely worn and I have to get rid of them because my arthritis won't allow me to wear them. (They'll be on my garage sale too. Just letting you know).
