A Blizzard For Super Bowl Sunday?

If you hang your hat on the reliability of the Farmer’s Almanac, you might want to stock up on the basic winter survival and blizzard gear for the upcoming Super Bowl weekend.

The almanac, who claims to be accurate 80% to 85% of the time, says “bitterly cold” temperatures and a major winter storm will pound the upper eastern seaboard on February 2nd. That is the same weekend the Super Bowl will be played at the Meadowlands stadium in New York.

UPDATE: NFL executives say they have an extremely stout plan to deal with anything mother nature can throw at them. The league has also said they have a plan to postpone the game if absolutely necessary.

What about the upper Midwest and the central plains? According to the Farmer’s Almanac’s Annual Weather Summary from November 2013 to October 2014,

Winter temperatures will be above normal in the east and below normal in the western parts of the region, with above-normal precipitation and snowfall. The coldest periods will be in mid- and late December, in early January, and from late February into early March. The snowiest periods will occur in mid- and late December, early January, and early February.

April and May will be warmer than normal, with near-normal precipitation.

Summer will be hotter and drier than normal, with drought a possibility. The hottest periods will occur in early July and early and mid-August.

September and October will be slightly warmer and drier than normal, on average, despite snow in mid- to late October.”

The Farmers’ Almanac publishers are highly secretive about the method used to make its predictions, only stating publicly that it is a “top secret mathematical and astronomical formula, that relies on sunspot activity, tidal action, planetary position and many other factors.”

The Farmers’ Almanac was founded in Morristown, New Jersey, in 1818.
