If you have already started to grumble and complain about the impending snow fall we are expected to get in the Sioux Falls area, just remember one thing, this time last year, we already had 7 inches of snow on the ground.

Just be thankful we were able to eek out this much mild weather for this long.

With that said, here's what you need to know regarding snow removal for the upcoming winter season in Sioux Falls.

  • When a snow alert is declared the City of Sioux Falls plans to plow all streets. Parking restrictions go into effect across the city, and vehicles parked on all streets are subject to ticketing and towing by zone.
  • The City of Sioux Falls does offer a text alert service to notify residents of snow alerts. It's easy to subscribe, simply send a text with the word SNOW to 605-413-1990, or go to www.siouxfalls.org/snow to subscribe to text, email, or social media notifications.
  • Should two inches of snow fall (day or night) with or without a snow alert being declared, residents must remove all vehicles parked on emergency snow routes. Failure to do so will result in those vehicles being subjected to ticketing and towing at the owner’s expense. Remember that all emergency snow routes are posted with signs.
  • After a snow alert has been issued, plows will enter neighborhoods after the snow has stopped falling and emergency routes are clear. Snow alerts will include the plowing schedule based on zone areas in the city. Vehicles cannot be parked legally on the street until the street has been plowed.
  • Snow gates are now being used citywide during snow alerts, with the exception of emergency snow routes that are three lanes or wider. Snow gates help cutdown on the amount of snow deposited in driveways, but do not completely eliminate the potential for snow to be deposited in driveways.
  • Remember, as a home owner, it's your responsibility to ensure mailboxes are accessible to mail carriers and to keep fire hydrants around your home clear of snow and other obstructions for 3 feet in all directions.
  • Residents have 48 hours from the time of the snowfall to clear all public sidewalks. That includes sidewalk curb ramps on corner lots and other curb cutouts. Residents are responsible for providing access from the street onto the sidewalk.
  • Finally, the city asks that you not place snow from your driveway or sidewalk onto the street.

Additional questions regarding snow removal within the city can be directed to the Public Works Street Division at 367-8255.  If you need to report a violation, contact Property Maintenance at 978-6900. Or visit www.siouxfalls.org/snow.
