It could be a cheap and relatively easy way to ward off Alzheimer's disease.

According to a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Neurology, men and women who use statins on a regular basis have a lower rate of dementia.

Statins are defined as "a class of drugs that reduce the levels of lipids in the blood by altering the enzyme activity in the liver that produces lipids: used in the prevention and treatment of heart disease."

Researchers involved with the study found that women who used statins regularly had a 15% lower rate of dementia; men a 12% reduction - but race and ethnicity are critical factors.

Black men seemed to gain little or no benefit from statins, while Hispanic men and women and white women benefited most from drugs like Lipitor, Zocor and Crestor.
