A Record Player That Plays Slices of Wood

If you think that vinyl is the only thing that can be played on a turntable, guess again. There's something else that, when played like a record, has an amazingly clear sound - a piece of sliced wood.

Built by an artist by the name of Bartholomaus Traubec, this particular record player - along with a considerable amount of computer programming - can actually translate the rings of trees into piano music.

How it works is the rings of a tree are analyzed so that their "arrangement and texture is translated sonically into music." With the help of special computer programming, each tree creates a unique piece of music.

Traubec has compiled the whole thing into a project called Years, a reference to the tree rings. When watching the video, pay attention to how the different types of wood change the sound.
