Aberdeen Central High School Trying to Curb Homecoming Eggings

'Tis the season for homecoming celebrations at high schools all over the area, and that means football games. pep rallies, and traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation.

But at least one South Dakota high school is trying to put an end to one long standing tradition.

In Aberdeen, city officials and administrators at Central High School are trying to stop the Golden Eagles' traditional 'egg throwing' at this week's homecoming.

For decades, some Central students have used homecoming week as an excuse to throw eggs during on campus activities.

This year, the school is working with the student senate, the Aberdeen police department, and even local businesses to curb the problem.

Some local stores are even posting signs to inform shoppers that egg and toilet paper sales will be prohibited to anyone under the age of 18 during homecoming week.

Central students have gotten involved, producing a public service campaign on local radio stations, urging students to fry - rather than 'fly' - eggs.  They are also handed out plastic eggs filled with candy and a reminder about the egging ban.

School administrators have even promised to dismiss school at 2:00pm Friday if there a minimal number of incidents.

So how are things going this week?

Aberdeen Superintendent Gary Harms told Jeff Bahr of the Aberdeen American News, the number of incidents have been:

...far, far fewer than any that I've been made aware of in the past...we're doing the best that we can.

I just want to thank the police department in trying to help us curb this unnecessary activity.

There have been a couple of eggings, and Harms says it might take charges being filed against students for the tradition to finally end.

The Golden Eagles host Yankton in Friday's homecoming game.
