Can a boat made entirely out of cardboard really float? Yes, and according to organizers of the The Great Cardboard Boat Race, many boats raced three times at last year’s event. This year's race will be held at Kuehn Park Pool on Saturday, July 12.

When finished, she may not look like a Ranger fishing boat but if she floats, you could win some neat prizes. So, how does one begin this nautical adventure? I would take a few tips from the 2 girls who won last year's event, pictured below. They created a vessel named the "Hogwarts Express" and paddled their way to victory.

If you'd like to give it a try, and we sincerely hope you do, here's few rules for the competition to help you prepare.

  • You may only use corrugated cardboard and duct tape.
  • Use your imagination.
  • Cardboard may be waxed.
  • Hint: If you layer the cardboard, it will be much stronger.
  • No wood, Styrofoam, fiberglass, or plastic, except for your oars and paddles.
  • All boats must be powered by humans 7 years and older. There are 5 age divisions.
  • Swimsuits required. That's good.
  • Avoid all icebergs. Too soon?
  • Lifejackets must be worn by contestants and will be provided.

All boats will be judged based on creativity, sea-worthiness—and quickest to sink! Come join in on the fun and win some prizes. Each boat will need two participants, one at each end of the pool. Ages 7 and older. The event is free but registration is required.

You can register online at siouxfalls.org/parks. Simply click on the blue tab that says ONLINE REGISTRATION & PAYMENT.

Registration closes five business days in advance. Boat check-in at 9 a.m. Race at 10 a.m.
