‘American Idol’ Recap — Top 8 Sing Motown, Devin Velez Sent Home
On Wednesday night’s episode of ‘American Idol,’ the top eight performed Motown tracks, with mentorship provided by Smokey Robinson, a living legend who exemplifies that sound.
The girls did better than the boys, as has been the case for much of the current season. Bilingual vocalist Devin Velez was sent home, as the judges elected not to use their only save of the season to keep him around, eliminating him on Thursday’s results episode.
Below is the breakdown of who sang what on Wednesday night.
Lazaro Arbos: He sang Stevie Wonder’s ‘For Once in My Life’ and it was better than last week’s disappointing showing.
Janelle Arthur: The adorable country songstress tackled the Supremes’ ‘You Keep Me Hangin’ On.’ She strapped on a guitar to do so and she was in the zone from start to finish.
Devin Velez: He belted out ‘The Tracks of My Tears’ and it was emotional and amazing, at least for the judges, who proclaimed it such after he performed. The American voting audience disagreed and sent him home. The judges didn’t love it that much, since they didn’t spend their sole season save to retain Velez’s services.
Candice Glover: She effortlessly and naturally roared through ‘Heard It Through the Grapevine.’ She wasn’t anything but who and what she is, and she was unquestionably safe.
Angie Miller: She sang an upbeat number in the form of ‘You Better Shop Around.’ Obviously, she was trying to loosen up and have fun, but in the end, it wasn’t relaxed, at all, and it was too pitchy.
Amber Holcomb: She rocked Stevie Wonder’s ‘Lately,’ which was a “tour de force,” according to Mariah Carey. Nicki Minaj said that when God made Holcomb’s vocal cords, he was showing off. Zing.
Kree Harrison: She tore up Aretha Franklin’s ‘Don’t Play That Song (You Lied)’ and slayed. She’s still a favorite, and even ‘Retha herself phoned in the next day to say she loved what Harrison did with her song. Say what?! Harrison was moved to tears after the Queen of Soul’s endorsement.
Burnell Taylor: He won our hearts with his quirky and lovely-as-a-summer-day rendition of ‘Mon Cherie Amour,’ looking debonair in a white suit.
With Velez voted off, we’re down to a top 7 and inching closer to the winner of season 12 of ‘Idol.’
