The Sioux Falls Downtown Lions Club will host a celebration at the Holiday Inn City Center on Tuesday March 15 to honor local teens in the Sioux Empire who volunteer throughout the community. Sixty-seven students will be recognized for their commitment to volunteer service through the SALSA (Serve and Learn Student Association) program.

The SALSA program is run through the Helpline Center and engages high school students in the area to make a difference in our community through volunteering. The youth honored at the event on the 15th have all volunteered at least 50 hours in the past 12 months, with many having volunteered over 100 hours in the same time frame.

The partnership between the Downtown Lions Club and the Helpline's SALSA program started 11 years ago when the Lions Club adopted SALSA as its LEO Club. Since then, the LEO Club has grown to be the largest LEO Club in the world, with over 1,500 participants.

Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether, Sioux Falls Schools Superintendent Dr. Brian Maher, and Brandon Valley High School Principal Dr. Gregg Talcott will all be on hand to offer their comments on youth service. The Downtown Lions Club will also announce their nominee for the International Leo of the Year Award for 2016.
