The summer of 2015 will go down as a pretty good one for Becky Hammon.

It began with the Rapid City native making headlines as the first woman to coach a NBA summer league team, as she guided the San Antonio Spurs to the title in Las Vegas last month.

Now she's being honored by one of her former WNBA teams.

Sunday, the New York Liberty paid tribute to their former star, putting Hammon in their ring of honor at halftime of their game against the Seattle Storm. Hammon spent the first eight seasons of her 16-year career with New York, starting as an undrafted free agent in 1999. She helped the Liberty reach the WNBA Finals three times and ranks second in franchise history for games played and 3-pointers made, and is third on New York's career scoring list.

During her induction ceremony, Hammon said:

I want you guys to know that I'm from South Dakota, my mom would slap me silly if I forgot my roots.

You guys are part of my roots. I always had so much pride putting that New York Liberty jersey on and representing this amazing city, the greatest city in the world.

It all starts here, my journey as a basketball player and how the fans have always embraced me even when I was the last person on the bench.

Nothing came easy to me, I had to fight and scrap for every little bit of playing time that I got and I would not do it any other way.

Hammon was traded to San Antonio in 2007 and went on to play eight more seasons in San Antonio before retiring at the end of last year. She was a six-time WNBA All-Star.
