Because the flu outbreak is so crazy this year, health officials are urging people to do whatever they can to avoid getting sick.

But not all preventative measures are created equal.

Here’s a rundown of some of the biggest flu mistakes people are making:

•Assuming the vaccine is all you need – Even if you got the flu shot, keep in mind that it's not guaranteed protection.

•Covering your sneeze with your hands – It’s much better to cough and sneeze into your elbow.

•Washing your hands in a hurry – Too many people are just rinsing their hands and not scrubbing. Healthy hand washing requires at least 20 seconds, or about the time it takes to sing "Happy Birthday" twice.

•Pretending you aren't sick – Ignoring your cough and still going to work or school is a great way to make yourself – and the people around you – sicker.
