I had the distinct honor last week of spending time with two brand new tiny miracles. They were both born about 5 ½ weeks early and are both dark-haired wonders. I have known their moms since they were little girls and watching them grow into beautiful, confident young women and now moms, has been extraordinary.

Little Kirk's arrival, his mom Jenna's survival and Aurora's (Rory's) early entrance into the world are both stories that belong in and enhance this season of miracles. When I last spied Kirk he was being placed back into his special bed wearing his eye-protecting goggles, hooked up to multiple monitors in the NICU (neo-natal intensive care unit) at the hospital. He looked like an itty-bitty aviator preparing for a flight into dreamland as his mom and dad, Jenna and Marvin headed for a snack and a short break.

I also spent an evening with my best buddy Ben, his wife Linda, daughter Morgan and granddaughter Rory. It was my first meeting with this miniature angel and I held her for almost an hour while she snuggled and seemingly dreamed in peaceful slumber. We looked at photographs of Morgan at the same age and the resemblance is keen, even though everyone thinks she looks just like her dad Mitch.

Both of these remarkable experiences gave me an injection of hope during a time when I feel I most need it. Economically, politically, and emotionally this has been a difficult year for me and facing an uncertain future has weighed heavily on my mind. I know I'm not alone in this zone which I seem to be occupying, it just feels that way at times.

These tiny, innocent, new people have reminded me that life is indeed a miracle, a gift; a rare and precious occurrence that deserves to be given, loved, protected, honored, fought for, and lived, with all the exuberance we can muster, from our first breath outside of our mother's body to our last breath on this planet.
