Careless Driving Becoming a Problem in South Dakota

Right on the heels of the story about the 24-year-old Sioux Falls woman that drove off the road, hit a tree, and flipped her vehicle, all because she was eating a frosty while driving, comes this little tidbit of information.

The state of South Dakota ranks #2 in the nation for the number of people under the age of 19 who die from auto accidents.

KDLT News is reporting that story today.

Little distractions like eating behind the wheel, texting while driving, or primping yourself in the mirror while motoring down the road can quickly lead to catastrophe.

Bobbi Lower, Development Director, with the Sioux Empire Safety Village is working hard each day to help end distracted driving. Lower says the key is taking the time to get those distractions out of the way before you get in the car each day.

According to Lower, “It’s not that hard really; things such as you know when you get in your car, make sure you have things in place, you have things secured.”

The secret to ending distracted driving, is to keep your hands on the wheel, eyes on the road, and your mind engaged in what you are doing, in this case, driving.

Lower says, while there are no accident statistics regarding distracted driving specifically, it is still very much a problem.

Police want to remind motorists that careless, reckless, driving can also take a wallop on your wallet. Should you receive a careless driving citation, that ticket can easily cost you in the neighborhood of $120.
