City Council Member Greg Jamison Announces Candidacy for Mayor

Greg Jamison, Sioux Falls City Council
City of Sioux Falls

City Council Member Greg Jamison announced Tuesday July 23, his candidacy to run for Mayor in April of 2014.

Council member Jamison represents the southwest district in Sioux Falls. He is currently in a second four year term which ends in 2016. While on the council, he can run for Mayor without having to resign the council seat. He keeps his seat if he loses. If he wins, the council has the authority to decide who will fill his vacant seat. That person would have to live in the southwest district.

During his announcement Jamison spoke on changing the culture at city hall. His strong first sentence is followed by a more sedate one:

If we don’t change the culture at City Hall, the Sioux Falls I’ve grown(up in) and loved the quality of life is going to be ruined. Ruined might be a little harsh, but the way(the current mayor Huether) runs his office. The his way or the highway approach is not productive for the city of Sioux Falls.”

During his announcement Jamison did not offer specific changes he would make if elected, but spoke in generalities about community needs.

Greg Jamison is a life long resident of the City. He grew up near Campus Park in Central Sioux Falls, where he made his announcement. His father, Bob Jamison, served on the Five Person City Commission in the late 1980′s and also on the new City Council which was created by voter approval in the early 1990′s.

Council member Jamison has been at odds with the current mayor on several occasions, but has not prevailed when votes were taken by the council

Mayor Huether has not formally announced his candidacy for the job. He has sent out very strong signals of his plans to run.

It is not supposed to matter at the local level, but Huether is a Democrat and Jamison is a Republican. Expect partisans to be more involved in this election. The Republicans don’t want Huether to use his time in city hall as a successful stepping stone to other political office.

No other potential candidates have surfaced yet. But it is early. Even if it is only Mayor Huether and Councilman Jamison, it will be an interesting race. Also on the ballot are issues which will draw more people to the polls, snowgates, the pool at Spellerberg, City Zoning Ordinances(Walmart at 85th and Minnesota) issue, and four council seats up for grabs.
