South Dakota Wing Civil Air Patrol responded to two emergency locator signals - ELTs - Tuesday (May 23), near Arlington and Watertown. It's rare to have two ELTs, and both of them be false alarms.

A Sioux Falls-based Cessna flew toward Watertown. At the same time a team from Sioux Falls and Brookings were activated and dispatched.

The first ELT signal came from Arlington Municipal Airport, locating the plane in a hangar.

A second false ELT signal was also tracked to a plane at the Watertown Regional Airport.

Two ELTs active at the same time within 40 miles of each other is an extremely rare occurrence.

With both ELTs shut off, the search aircraft and ground teams returned to base and the AFRCC closed out the mission.
