A Codington County Deputy Sheriff needed to be taken to the hospital and treated for injuries he sustained Saturday night after being dragged by a car nearly a half mile during a traffic stop.

KSFY TV is reporting the incident took place around 8:45 PM on Saturday, (October 7) around the 1400 block of Highway 20.

According to KSFY TV, the deputy pulled over a vehicle, and during the process of the traffic stop suspected drugs may be involved. That caused the suspect to speed off dragging the deputy as he attempted to apprehend the driver.

The suspect eventually lost control of his car, and KSFY TV reports the vehicle crashed into a street sign along the road. At which point the suspect then fled the scene on foot.

Authorities closed a portion of Highway 20 as they searched for the missing suspect, who was later found thanks to a tip from the public.

Authorities ended up taking 19 year-old Jacob Englehart of Watertown into custody, and KSFY TV reports they charged him with aggravated assault on law enforcement, aggravated eluding in a vehicle and drug possession with intent to distribute.

The Watertown Police Department told KSFY TV that a substantial amount of marijuana, THC Hash and other paraphernalia was found at the scene.

More charges could be filed against Englehart as the investigation continues.
