So which is more important on Thanksgiving:  "Time With Family" or "Shopping For Bargains"?

According to Walmart's website, the average wage for a full-time store worker is $12.83 per hour, which translates into a salary of about $27,000 per year.  Most Walmart store workers didn't earn $25,000 last year and most worked on Thanksgiving.

Businessweek reports that Costco's hourly employees earn more than $20 an hour.  Kip Tindell, the company's CEO and founder reports Costco's retail employees average a salary of nearly $50,000 a year — almost twice the retail industry average.

"That one great employee is just as productive as three workers who are only good," said Tindell.

And unlike most big box and smaller retailers Costco gives it's employees Thanksgiving off to be with their families.

Paul Latham, a spokesman for Costco, told HuffPost, "Since our inception 30-plus years ago, we have always been closed on Thanksgiving so our employees can be with their families.  It will be the same this year."

According to The Motley Fool Costco stock continually outperforms Walmart stock.

Evidence would seem to support that paying employees more and giving them quality family time off translates into bigger profits. So why don't all employers do this?  Really. How come?
