Cougars Hold Off Golden Rams’ Late Rally
CLERMONT, FL — The University of Sioux Falls softball team held off a late charge against West Chester University on Monday, as the Cougars (10-3) defeated the Golden Rams (10-5) 5-4 in Clermont, Fla. after USF held a five-run lead in the sixth inning.
Amanda Walters (7-3) recorded the win for USF as she allowed four runs over seven innings. She struck out five, walked five and surrendered six hits.
The Cougars went up for good in the first, scoring one run on an RBI single by Shae Hoskins.
USF Cougars tacked on another two runs in the sixth when Kellen Dewey singled, bringing home Shae Hoksins to start the inning. Dewey ended the day going 1-of-3 at the plate with one single and RBI.
West Chester University scored on a two-run double by Kelly Anderson in the sixth inning and a two-run home run by Megan Kelly in the seventh inning, but it was too little too late as the Golden Rams couldn’t close the gap against the Cougars.
The Cougars scored their five runs off of nine hits and five RBIs. As a team, USF batted 0.300 (10-of-30) on their way to victory.
USF’s afternoon matchup with Saint Michael’s College was cancelled due to rain and thunderstorms. The Cougars will take the field next on Tuesday morning when they square off with Minnesota-Crookston with the game slated for 8 a.m.
