SIOUX CITY, IA — Trevor Crow went 5-for-6 and drove in a career-high two runs as Sioux Falls defeated Briar Cliff 13-5 in a Tuesday afternoon non-conference tilt at West High School in Sioux City.

The Cougars improve to 5-13 with Briar Cliff dropping to 3-12 for the season.

All of Crow’s hits were singles and the former Brandon Valley star did not post a strikeout. Senior Keith Cutler went 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Corey Vasquez and Zach Ireland each had two hits as well. Dylan Dwyer scored three runs and drew a pair of walks.

The Cougars had 18 hits in the contest—the most a USF team has recorded in almost three full seasons. USF racked up 25 hits in a 19-10 rout of Morningside College on April 7, 2010.

Sioux Falls senior Steve Schroer earned his first win of 2013 and is 1-2 on the year. He worked four innings and allowed two runs on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Five Cougar relievers saw action today, including redshirt senior Mark Vig, who threw one hitless inning with one walk and a strikeout.

USF broke ahead 1-0 in the top of the first with Cutler’s first RBI of the game. After Ryan Fobes led off with a single and swiped second, Cutler crushed the third pitch from BCU starter Gary Davis to right field.

The Chargers responded with a trio of two-out hits in their half of the frame and took a 2-1 lead on Josh Spenner’s base knock to left center.

USF went back in front the very next inning. With one out, Dwyer walked and made it all the way to third on Ireland’s base hit thanks to an errant throw by the left fielder. Dwyer would score on an infield single from Crow and Ireland was plated via a double-steal attempt.

The lead extended to 6-2 in the third inning. Vasquez led off with a double through the left side and Cutler then bounced a base hit into left-center to bring him home. Beste’s groundout was enough to score Cutler and a two-out keystone hit from Ireland plated home Jeremy Varner.

Single runs in the fourth and sixth innings increased the lead to 8-2. Durkin reached on a left field double and scored on a single by Vasquez to dead center. Beste singled to drive in Durkin, who opened the sixth frame with a walk.

The Chargers scratched across a run in the bottom of the seventh before USF reached double digits in runs with four more in a very sloppy eighth inning that saw the Cougars bat around in between two BCU fielding errors. Three of the first four Cougar batters walked to load the bases for Kardas, who drew a four-pitch walk from the Charger reliever to plate Cutler the easy way. Crow followed with an RBI single that plated two runs when the right fielder had a lapse in judgment and threw to the wrong base. The second baseman’s muffed throw scored Kardas to put USF up by nine runs.

In the ninth, Dwyer scampered from third to home on a passed ball for the Cougars’ last tally and Briar Cliff added two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to create the final margin.

USF resumes NSIC play this weekend against Minnesota-Duluth. Location of the four-game series versus the Bulldogs has yet to be determined due to unplayable conditions at Harmodon, the Cougars’ home ballpark.
