I had no idea that emptying my summer season plant pots and storing the dirt in my garage would turn out to be such a conversation starter! Yes, every spring/summer season I plant numerous containers (one year I had 27 - until Ben killed half of them while I was on vacation) with flowers and plants. I don't have a garden but I love planting my flowers and decorating my little paver patio with them.

No, I don't have a dirt pile, compost heap or in-ground garden where I can toss the dirt once the growing season is over, so - I empty the containers and keep the dirt in a large covered trash can. Before I put the dirt in the storage container I make sure it is dry to prevent mold. Then in the spring I have nicely textured, dry potting soil to which I add plant food, moisture and quite often a bit of fresh soil, before planting seeds or plants in it.

In years past I stored the used soil in the bags it originally came in, but that did allow for mice to nest in it occasionally and it seemed to mold more easily which led me to toss quite a bit of it. Since I started using the lidded garbage can, no problems whatsoever.

I have gone through this ritual every year of my life that I have been planting flowers and plants and have always had tremendous results and since you can't argue with a great outcome, I say phooey to Ben and his "dirt hoarder" negativity!

More than a few of our Facebook friends agreed with me:

And you can't argue with my results:
