As my wife likes to remind me so frequently, pets are people too! Each year she wants to dress up our two dogs Claire and Taylor in little pet costumes for Halloween. And every year, I say the same thing; “you really want to put our poor animals through that agony and humiliation again?”

I know if my oldest dog could talk, it would say, "Hey...I really don't want to dress up in this cheesy Wasp costume again!"

If you are one of those people who dress up your pets for Halloween, you're not alone. Americans are expected to spend nearly 370 million this year on Halloween costumes for pets. Now that's a scary number, especially in this economy!

Evidently the recession hasn't taken its toll on people spending scary amounts of money on little costumes for Muffy and Fido. The average pet owner buying a costume for their pet is expected to spend $79.82 this year. You can add a "1" in front of that number in my house.

By the way, if you’re looking for the most popular Pet Halloween Costumes this season, here are the top 5:

  • Superhero
  • Elephant
  • Lederhosen
  • A Taco
  • Chef

What? A Wasp didn't make the list! Imagine that!
