In one of the most sad stories you'll ever read from the sports world, Doug Flutie lost both his parents on Wednesday within a hour of each other.

His father had been ill for awhile according to reports and his mother suffered a deadly heart attack less than a hour after his father's passing on Wednesday.

Dick and Joan Flutie had been married for 56 years and Flutie eluded to the fact that they say you can die from a broken heart in regards to his mom's passing as well.

"They say you can die of a broken heart and I believe it," Flutie said. "I would like to honor my parents for all that they did throughout my and my brothers' and sister's lives. My parents were always there for their children, from the days my Dad coached us as kids and my Mom would work the concession stands, through to this morning."

The former NFL QB took to social media to react as well.

Flutie on the field was probably best known for the "Hail Mary" vs Miami while playing for Boston College.

Boston College sent out its condolences via Twitter as well on Wednesday.
