The driver of a car that allegedly struck two men on a tandem bicycle in western Sioux Falls last month is facing charges.

Police officer Sam Clemens says 70-year-old Melvin Louis Coelho of Sioux Falls is charged with overtaking, which is similar to improper passing, and careless driving.

Clemens says the man was driving a car that struck the tandem bicycle on North Marion Road on August 22.

A deaf and blind Norwegian man, 71-year-old Harald Vik, and an interpreter were attempting to ride the bike from South Dakota to Nebraska.

Vik, who is well-known in his home country as an advocate for disabled people, was able to return to Norway this week after being hospitalized for his injuries.
