A Sioux Falls man is charged after, police say, he drove his SUV through an apartment, narrowly missing a woman who lives there.

Police spokesman Sam Clemens says it happened around 1:40 AM Wednesday morning in the 3600 block of South Terry Avenue.

Clemens says the man had backed out of a driveway across the street, but when he went to go forward he lost control and the vehicle plowed into the window of the apartment across the street:

Clemens says witnesses provided information, and police located 31-year-old Shawn Edward George Essem at his home. Essem would not come to the door until around 9:30 AM, when he was arrested on charges of hit-and-run and reckless driving.

The 77-year-old woman in the apartment was not injured.

Damage to the apartment was estimated at $15,000, and damage to Essem's GMC Yukon was estimated at $5,000.
