If you were driving anywhere near the 37th and Kiwanis Avenue intersection on Thursday afternoon and wondering why there was such a traffic backup, you can thank an intoxicated driver.

Traffic slowed to a crawl Thursday, March 10, 2016 as Sioux Falls police came upon an accident involving a car that hit a telephone pole.

According to police, a 25-year-old Sioux Falls man was spotted driving erratically heading west near 37th Street and Western Avenue. His vehicle then blew a tire while attempting to make a right turn and crashed into a telephone pole near 37th and Kiwanis.

Both the driver and his 53-year old passenger sustained head injuries. The passenger was actually unconscious for a period of time.

Alcohol was definitely the cause of the crash according to police.

The PD eventually had to shut down a portion of Kiwanis Avenue during the afternoon as they investigated the crash scene.
