Fisherman Catches…WHAT?

There is a really good chance that an angler won’t be jigging for anything like this at Waubay Lake, Twin Lakes or Lake Vermillion.  Or, realistically, ANY lake in South Dakota.

Stewart Fraser was fishing with his sons off the coast of New Zealand when he noticed something odd-looking in the water.  After trying to decide  if he should pull it up or simply float on by the clear, shrimp-like looking creature in the water, Fraser’s curiosity got the better of him and he pulled it up out of the water.

Fraser and his sons were fishing 43 miles from New Zealand’s Karikari Peninsula when he pulled the creature into the boat.

Everyone was stumped about what the clear creature was, but scientists who saw Fraser’s photos now believe they have the answer.

The clear creature that Fraser found in the water is something called a salpa maggiore.  Not much is known about them, except they are pretty defenseless, using their somewhat scary appearance as a form of camouflage.  They usually live in colder seas, mostly in the Southern Ocean near Antarctica.   Take a look at the creepy, jelly-like looking creature that Fraser pulled out of the water.

So even though the temperature in South Dakota may sometimes feel as if we are living in Antarctica, anglers don’t have to worry about the salpa maggiore showing up on their lines or being talked about by Todd Heitkamp down at the Dakota Angler!
