Five Things We Learned From Week 1 of S.D. High School Football

The second week (Week 1) of high school football in South Dakota has been completed. Here are five things we learned.

1) Roosevelt Continues to be the Favorite

- The Rough Riders are 2-0 heading into Presidents Bowl this upcoming weekend and they put up 364 yards of total offense against O'Gorman. Jett Thune had a great night passing and helped move the Riders down the field pretty easily against a talented secondary of O'Gorman. Although the Riders defense gave up a lot of yards, 349, they only allowed 14 points.

2) Watch Out for the Lincoln Patriots

- Lincoln started Friday night's game a little slow against Washington, but the Patriots quickly pulled out in front and never looked back. Coach Aaron Beavers may have lost a lot of talented kids last year to graduation, but he already has reloaded his roster. Running back Nolan Kiley rushed for 65 yards and had a reception for 25 yards. Lee Ransom continues to play well, extending back to last year, with a 72 yard receiving performance. Quarterback Cole DeBerg went 11-18 for 122, but did throw one interception. Lincoln's defense played strong picking off Washington's Jack Schelhaas three times, two by Kade Walker, and only allowed 10 points to be scored. We'll learn even more from the Patriots this week against Roosevelt.

3) Pierre is that Good.

- There have been some questions regarding how good Pierre actually is. My biggest question was whether the Govs were better than the preseason two top teams from 11AA Yankton and Brookings. We now know that they are certainly better than Brookings. Pierre left no doubt with a 23-9 victory over the Bobcats on Friday night. The Govs are on a roll having defeated 11AAA member Watertown in Week 0, and now Brookings. They will face Harrisburg this week.

4) Washington Still is Growing

- The Warriors made a statement during Week 0's 31-7 win over Brandon Valley. The follow up against Lincoln didn't go as planned. Washington was held to three points throughout the first three quarters, before getting their lone touchdown with 3:43 left to go in the game. Jack Schelhaas attempted 29 passes, completing 11 of them, for 113 yards. Coach Chad Stadem has raved about the talent on the outside with Logan Utrecht, Carter Keller, and Ty Smith. As a group, they were held to just three catches and 38 yards. Schelhaas led the team with rushing with 91 yards. The Warrior defense though has played well, but was left on the field for a good portion of last week's game.

5) West Central Controlling Class A

- This shouldn't come as a surprise but West Central is looking great so far to start 2015. Kent Mueller has a talented group of kids, including seven back on defense, and are looking to get back to capturing state championships. The Trojans defeated Canton this past weekend 30-7, and also beat Dakota Valley in the first week 44-7. They have a tough matchup against 2-0 Madison this weekend.
