Four men from Georgia, all in their 20s, are charged in a forgery scheme in Sioux Falls that police say involved dozens of checks and tens of thousands of dollars in losses to banks and other businesses.

Information Officer Sam Clemens says the four are accused of passing bogus checks over the past several weeks and enlisting the help of transients:

Clemens says police believe the scheme involved 48 counterfeit checks and an estimated $150,000 in losses to the victims but he says it's not known how the men obtained the checks in the first place. He says the men, ranging in age from 21 to 28 and two from Atlanta and two from Decatur, Georgia, are each charged with nine counts of possession of a forged instrument, and he says more charges are possible.
