The tiny town of Amidon, in southwestern North Dakota, has lost its claim to fame, but the Associated Press says a town in South Dakota is right there to take its place.

Amidon is the county seat of Slope County, ND, and a sign at the edge of town boasts that it's the smallest county seat in the nation. But the 2010 census put Amidon's population at 20, so Gann Valley, county seat of Buffalo County, SD, pat yourself on the back and be proud. Your town now has the distinction of being the nation's smallest county seat, with 14 people.

A county seat is an administrative center, or seat of government, for a county or civil parish.

We've only been to Gann Valley once, and like many other dots on the map, it's a blink-and-you'll-miss it place. But they have a website, and if you can't be proud of where you live, you don't have much.

By the way, Amidon is near two tourist attractions, the Burning Coal Vein Campgrounds (really!) and White Butte, the highest point in North Dakota.

And the town's mayor, Jerry Erickson, tells the Bismarck Tribune he thinks 33 people now live in the community.

At that rate, Gann Valley's distinction looks secure, but they'll have to wait until the 2020 census to be sure.
