Not much is known about ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2’ yet, and that’s just the way Marvel wants it. But, just because we know nothing about ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2’ doesn’t mean that Marvel knows nothing about it. Director James Gunn said he sat down with the studio to detail his vision for the upcoming superhero sequel, and their reaction was, “Whoa. That’s risky.”

To be clear, Gunn says Marvel trust him and was “okay” with his seemingly radical plan for the future of the ‘Guardians’. Gunn explained on the Alison Rosen Is Your New Best Friend podcast:

It’s not really based on anything. The story for Guardians 2 is an original story that I came up with that I started working on actually while I was shooting Guardians 1, and it’ll answer some of the questions that were put forth in the first movie about Peter Quill’s father and who he is and what’s going on with that. We’ll get to know some of the characters a little bit more and then we’re going to meet a couple of new characters who will be very important to Guardians movies and probably important to the Marvel Universe as a whole.

Most of this we already knew, especially the bit about Peter Quill’s father, which Gunn has talked about previously. We’ve theorized it will be Starfox, which would also help usher in the Eternals. But, it’s also interesting that Gunn mentions there will be a “couple of new characters” that will be important to the Marvel Universe.

Gunn has previously ruled out characters we thought might be joining the Guardians, like Nova and Captain Marvel, both of which he said are unlikely to appear at this time. Gunn also added that there won’t be any additional “earthlings” in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2’ to keep the focus squarely on Quill as an outsider.

We’ll guess at this point that Gunn is referring to Adam Warlock, a character eagle-eyed Marvel fans may have caught hinted at in the first film. His cocoon is visible in The Collector’s gallery, curiously burst open at the end of the film. Those who’ve read the ‘Infinity Gauntlet’ comics know that Warlock is very central to that storyline (he essentially leads the fight against Thanos). That’s one character that fits well into the cosmic universe of the ‘Guardians’ and also fits in with the Earth-bound superheroes, especially Doctor Strange.

What about all of this is “risky” remains to be seen, but if a movie about a talking raccoon can make over $750 million, we think risky seems to be a good bet for Marvel these days.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ opens in theaters on May 5, 2017.
