Back in 1973 cartoonist Dik Browne launched a little red-bearded, rotund, Viking in a horned helmet. Not in search of worlds undiscovered, but in 136 newspapers and it soon became the fastest growing comic strip ever. “Hagar the Horrible”, much like Browne’s earlier strip “Hi and Lois”, dealt with a man’s exploits in his work and home life.

Hagar, however, didn’t live in the suburbs, he lived somewhere in Norway during the Middle Ages. His life revolved around his job, ( looting and pillaging), his family, (wife Helga, son  Hamlet, and daughter Honi) and the tavern he patronized with his buddies.

When Dik Browne retired in 1988, his son Chris Browne (the inspiration for the character Hamlet), continued the strip and to this day from his home here in Sioux Falls, he sends Hagar on his adventures through life and the comic strip appears in some 2,000 newspapers worldwide.

Chris and his wife Caroll visited Sioux Falls during Augie’s Viking Days one year and they loved it so much they moved here, in 2006, from Sarasota, Florida of all places! Sioux Falls is very proud and honored to have a world-class cartoonist and author here, living, working and freezing his niblets off with the rest of us!
