With Halloween right around the corner, it's not a guy wearing a white mask, carrying a rather large butcher knife that is frightening people anymore.

The world is much different place these days.

Chapman University in Southern California just released the results of a nationwide survey asking people what are the top 5 things they fear the most.

Believe it or not, the number one thing is walking alone at night. The majority of the people polled said they don't feel safe walking by themselves, especially at night.

Long gone are the days when you could feel safe taking a late night stroll down a dimly lit road all by yourself, or allowing your kids to play outside by themselves after dark.

Identity theft was next. And understandably so. It seems like every time you turn on the news, you hear about somebody getting their personal information hacked.

Overall lack of safety while on the Internet was the third thing that people fear the most. You never know what kind of computer virus you might get. Or who is tracking your every move online.

Mass shootings also weigh heavy on a number of peoples minds. Shootings were the fourth biggest thing that tends to strike fear in people according to the survey. Nearly 10% of the people surveyed legitimately fear they could become a victim.

And finally, rounding out the top 5, is the fear of public speaking. I'll second that. I personally have never enjoyed speaking in front of a large group of people. 8.8% of the people in the survey said they too are "very afraid" of doing it.
