Now that Halloween's over, what are you suppose to do with those pumpkins you carved? You could let them slowly rot in front of your house. Or, you can compost them.

Through November 27, you can take your old jack-o-lanterns to the City of Sioux Falls' two leaf drop-off sites and at the Sioux Falls Regional Sanitary Landfill.

“Composting pumpkins allows us a chance to divert material from the landfill and instead turn it into nutrient-rich soil. We then provide the compost for free for residents to use in their gardens. This allows us to take a traditional waste material and instead bring it full circle by turning it into a valuable, natural resource,” said Jessica Lantgen, Sustainability Coordinator.

Pumpkins need to be free of candles, yarn, stickers, googly eyes, and any form of plastic to be accepted. The pumpkins will be composted at the landfill through the yard waste program. Compost is available for free for residents to pick up at the landfill year-round.

Pumpkins will be accepted at no charge at these three locations:
• Sioux Falls Regional Sanitary Landfill, 26750 464th Avenue, Hartford
• East-side leaf and branch drop-off site, 1015 East Chambers Street
• West-side leaf and branch drop-off site, 301 North Lyon Boulevard
