Michelle Erpenbach’s proposal to city council to allow only hands free devices in vehicles driving on Sioux Falls streets failed to move forward to a second reading by a vote of 5 to 3.

Erpenbach cited statistics of accidents being three times more likely to occur while cell phones are in use and also shared stories of accidents on city streets where cell phones were seen as a contributing factor.

Despite the conviction to create safer streets, Commissioners Jamison, Karsky, Staggers, Anderson and Erickson did not vote in favor of the second reading, effectively killing it from moving forward to become an ordinance.
