Earlier this year, Maddie Lukomski, a student at Sioux Falls Lincoln High School, was named the winner in the spoken word category in the Poetry Ourselves competition from Poetry Out Loud. You can hear her winning poem, My Sleeves in the video above.

Poetry Out Loud, from the National Endowment for the Arts, is a national arts education program that encourages the study of poetry in high schools across the country. South Dakota’s program is administered by the South Dakota Arts Council with help from Arts South Dakota and South Dakota Public Broadcasting.

Lukomski won the state Poetry Out Loud competition in March. She then represented South Dakota in Washington DC at the Poetry Out Loud National Finals in May. Poetry Out Loud gave state champions the opportunity to showcase their creative writing skills and submit their own written or spoken word poems. They were then judged by Patricia Smith, a poetry slam champion and National Book Award finalist.
