Just in case you ever need to do something similar, I decided to put together a little primer on how to survive a fifteen hour, three state drive, beat the clock and make it back to work before time runs out!

Let's do a little tally shall we?

  • Quarts of coffee consumed - two and a half. Or was it three?
  • Number of sandwiches eaten - 2 turkey & swiss, 1 pickle & pimento loaf with swiss
  • Snacks consumed - Half a bag of baby carrots, one fourth of a box of Provolone flavored Cheez-Its, one bag Lays Wavy Garlic & Sea Salt potato chips, a handful of Twizzler Bites (cherry, strawberry, black raspberry) and one Hershey Dark Chocolate covered caramel
  • Oreo Thins noshed -  one entire row out of the package
  • 1 large ice tea, 2 bottles of mineral water

This may seem excessive to someone who has never hit the road on 4 hours of sleep for a long trip. Believe me when I tell you that even on a good day when I've had plenty of sleep, I still get drowsy when I drive.

So, staying awake when already tired is a feat of monumental proportions, accomplished only through the magic of constant snacking, listening to a David Baldacci "King & Maxwell" murder mystery and the stretching out ritual at the gas stations where I stopped along the way.
