Iowa Boy Left At Bus Stop
A West Des Moines, Iowa woman is having to deal with something that no parent in the winter months with freezing temperatures should have to worry about. Her 6-year old son was left at the wrong bus stop, by himself, in the freezing cold about a tenth of a mile from his home.
Last Thursday, Jennifer Cabanayan of West Des Moines, Iowa, claims that her 6-year old son,who attends a Waukee elementary school, was dropped off by the school bus at the wrong location with no supervision. The boy, who had just entered the school district, was standing outside in the freezing temperatures for over an hour.
For him to be out in this weather for over an hour for his small body was traumatizing. He thought his fingers were going to fall off. He tried everything he could by putting them in his mouth.
The Waukee School District does have a policy for kindergarten and first grade student bus riders. The student should only be dropped off at a bus stop if there is an authorized guardian present. Last Thursday, there was no guardian present for this 6-year old boy, yet he was still dropped off at the bus stop in very cold conditions.
Durham School Services, the company that handles bus service for the school district, is reviewing the incident, and the bus driver was assigned to another route.
The National Weather Service has said that temperatures in the Des Moines area last Thursday were between 12 to 19 degrees.
