Is The National Media To Blame For Newtown?

Since Friday morning, you haven’t been able to turn on any news station without them talking about the horrible tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut where 20 children were among 28 murdered. The evening of the murders, I was horrified to see the images of reporters interviewing elementary school children who survived the attack. And I don’t care that the parents gave their permission. They make me as sick as the reporters since they’re just looking for their 15 minutes of fame too.

But the more coverage I watched and read, the more it has started to remind me of the 1994 Oliver Stone movie “Natural Born Killers” where Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis play a pair of psychopathic serial killers glorified by the mass media. Nearly 20 years later, the movie seems to be playing itself out.

Start with the terrible tragedy in Newtown. Adam Lanza will become a household name. James Holmes walked into a full theatre in Aurora, Colorado showing Batman and opened fire killing 12 and injuring 58. If I say the names Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, you don’t even need me to say “Columbine”.

Now here’s my point. Name one person killed in any of these horrific tragedies.

Someone opens fire in an Oregon Mall, or on a temple in Wisconsin, or God knows where else it’s going to happen. But these killers are sensationalized by the national media and news organizations. Until the talk shows, the CNN’s, MSNBC’s all the networks stop talking about these twisted individuals, I have a terrible feeling that we haven’t seen the last of it.

Here are the names I want to remember:

The teachers and administrators killed at Sandy Hook Friday:

Dawn Hocksprung, 47
Rachel Davino, 29
Anne Marie Murphy, 52
Lauren Russeau, 30
Mary Sherlach, 56
Victoria Soto, 27

And these innocent children:

Charlotte Bacon, 6
Daniel Barden, 7
Olivia Engel, 6
Josephine Gay, 7
Ana M. Marquez-Greene, 6
Dylan Hockley, 6
Madeleine F. Hsu, 6
Catherine V. Hubbard, 6
Chase Kowalski, 7
Jesse Lewis, 6
James Mattioli, 6
Grace McDonnell, 7
Emilie Parker, 6
Jack Pinto, 6
Noah Pozner, 6
Caroline Previdi, 6
Jessica Rekos, 6
Aveille Richman, 6
Benjamin Wheeler, 6
Allison N. Wyatt, 6
