JazzFest 2013 is proving to be one of the best on record as we've gone five-for-five on absolutely kick ass performances over the first two days of the festival in Sioux Falls!

The Scott Holt Band from Nashville drove 14 hours straight through for the gig in our fair city and showed no ill-effects of being on the road all that time as they kicked things off with a searing 90 minute set that included a lot of originals and some fun covers of some of the masters like Muddy Waters and Holt's mentor (and a man that Holt served an 11-year apprenticeship with as a member of his band, Hall of Famer Buddy Guy)

Holt also enjoys a lot of audience interaction, drawing them into the show (whether they had intended to have fun or not!) and loves to leave the stage while playing and surprise audience members, having THEM become a part of the show, as he did again with my wife Sarah and many others.

Holt set the bar high for the performers that followed and boy did they follow!

Grammy Award winners Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band took the stage at 8pm and as he was fond of saying, "There ain't nothin' like a Chubby Party" and he wasn't kidding!

Chubby has been a frequent visitor to Sioux Falls over the years, as 2013 marked his third JazzFest appearance and he let us all know it'd been too damn long! His 90 minute set drew the growing crowd even more towards the stage and they couldn't help but get on their feet, clap their hands and shake their butts to the beat of the Cajun, Zydeco, party music that Chubby was laying down.

Our headliners for Friday night were southern rock/blues titans the North Mississippi All Stars!

The power trio absolutely floored the estimated crowd of 25,000 with their talent and versatility as they would switch instruments in the middle of a song without missing a beat, to showing off a classic guitar box guitar and even an electric washboard with a wah wah pedal!

The hardcore fans who know and love the band were right down front and I heard a lot of reactions like "I didn't know much about them but they're AWESOME!"

Three very different acts, but three absolutely smoking performances!

Today (Saturday July 20) is the final day of Sioux Falls JazzFest. Courtesy of Midcontinent Communications, Sheryl Crow will headline at 10pm. Music starts at noon with the Hegg Brothers (who are also going to be doing a not-so-secret Spooncat! reunion on the second stage at 7:15pm! The Jazz Campers will play at 1:30 followed by the thrift store funk of Lincoln, Nebraska's Kris Lager Band. At 4:30, I've heard all kinds of great things about Mingo Fishtrap. 6pm finds Beau Soleil avec Michael Doucet taking the stage with some cajun fun. At 8pm it's guitar master Doyle Bramhall II (Stevie Ray Vaughan, Arc Angels, Eric Clapton among his credits!) Crow will take the stage at about 10pm followed by fireworks.

Remember, you can park in Yankton Trail Park for a $10 per carload donation. The shuttle buses will be running today from Lincoln, Roosevelt and O'Gorman high schools for $3 per person round trip. You can ride your bikes in on the bike trails for free and there is a complimentary bike valet in the park. And you can walk in. However you choose to get there, it's going to be another great day at JazzFest 2013!
