Kate Winslet Style Breakdown: What’s Right, What’s Wrong, and How to Fix It

Kate Winslet is a true English rose. With her peaches and cream complexion, her loose wavy hair and curvy figure, she’s a natural beauty. The newlywed is a sure bet to turn heads, and is someone style watchers look forward to seeing on red carpets.

But that said, she’s had a handful of questionable fashion moments, too.

Her staples? Form-fitting gowns with low-cut necklines paired with updos swept off her face.

This shimmery, black and gold gown clings to every curve, and its sparkly sex appeal is heightened thanks to the cleavage-baring bodice. She’s a gilded goddess here.

Here she is, ravishing in red at the 2011 Emmys. And even though she loves low-cut necklines, they’re never trashy on her since she doesn’t show too much and her rack isn’t the only thing you notice.

She also isn’t afraid to go short or wear her hair down every once in a while — and the result is just as stunning. Her dresses always have a dash of sparkle or pizzazz, even when she’s rocking a simple LBD. And for a woman who isn’t super tall, she’s got enviable legs.

Her best style trait is that she’s glam while remaining unfussy. She’s not one to wear tons of makeup or try cosmetic trends like heavy smoky eyes. She keeps it simple and natural.

The textured fabric on her sleeveless dress here is subtle and her creamy fair skin glows. The rosy lip color is well-matched to this ensemble. Props, Kate. (Or, more likely, Kate’s glam squad.)

What’s Right:

She bloomed like a gorgeous red rose at the 2002 Oscars in this Ben de Lisi gown with a flowered strap. It’s one of her iconic looks, and the overall styling (length, silhouette and color) is one she would come to replicate often.

Her periwinkle Badgley Mischka gown at the 2005 Oscars shows her fearlessness with color and cut. Gorgeous doesn’t even begin to describe it. We also love the half-up, half-down ‘do.

LBDs are also another one of Kate’s fortes. The tiered skirt and bow-tie sash here are delicate flourishes, another of her hallmarks.

She’s also anything but boring in basic black. She glams up with a simple shorts ensemble that not everyone can pull off. Her confidence helps this one “work.”

What’s Wrong:

There have been few (and far between) style mistakes for the Oscar-winning actress.

Winslet went for Old Hollywood glam with this jeweled black frock. It’s an attempt at classic, but it misses the mark a bit. The hair is too stiff, and it ages her.

At the 2012 Golden Globes, the top half of her dress was a little dowdy. Even with the keyhole, the cut screams “middle-aged school teacher.” She could also use some sort of support for her girls here.

While we adore her grey Yves St. Laurent gown from the 2009 Academy Awards, her hair was too helmet-y. Even so, she went home with Oscar gold.

Everything about this Victoria Beckham dress is a mistake, from the muddy color to the structured, fussy collar. She looks short and stumpy since the hem hits mid-calf. This would look great on a stick figure like Beckham, but it’s ill-fitting on curvier gals like Miss Winslet. (Or Mrs. Rocknroll, as she may be calling herself these days.)

The back is worse. The giant zipper is post-modern and structural, but it’s not flattering. She’s like a sausage about to burst its casing. A rare misstep for the actress.

This lime green, drapey Valentino dress from 2007 washes her out. It’s just blah.

How to Fix It:

Winslet is usually spot-on in her choices. She needs to stick with what she already knows works.

This colorblocked dress fits right and is bold without being fussy, and the ankle-strap heels are supremely sexy. Given the simple cut of this dress, she’s not as compact as she was in the Beckham dress. The frocks have the same hemline, but the basic shape of this dress is far better suited for her frame.

Here she is in another colorblocked Stella McCartney frock. The chunky black heels pair perfectly with the piping in the dress.

She can also kick up the basic LBD a notch with a shimmery fabric and a tight fight like the one below that hugs those bodacious curves.
