Lake Alvin, the popular beach facility located 4 miles east, and 1 mile north of Harrisburg, is back in the swimming business again.

Even though it won't be quite the blast furnace outside this week, that last week was, it will still be an excellent week to take advantage of a favorite swimming hole in the area.

The small recreation area that many people from around the Sioux Empire congregate at to fish and swim reopened Wednesday, June 8, 2016, after water samples taken Tuesday, June 7 showed healthy levels of the bacteria.

The park had been closed for swimming but open to fishing since June 3.

The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department temporarily closed the state park when tests showed unhealthy levels of E. coli in the water.

During the summer of 2015, five South Dakota state parks tested high for E.coli:

• Palisades State Park in Garretson

• Big Sioux Recreation Area in Brandon

• Newton Hills State Park in Canton

• Good Earth State Park in Canton

• Beaver Creek Recreation Area in Linton
