Lea Michele covers the December issue of ELLE and in the feature, the singer and actress revealed key details about how she coped and where she camped out in the immediate days after her boyfriend and ‘Glee‘ co-star Cory Monteith died of a drug overdose.

Michele had dropped out of sight — understandably so — to deal with her grief and to mourn Monteith’s death in the ensuing days.

She revealed she had became close to actress Kate Hudson during her scenery-chewing stint as a dance instructor on the show. While K. Hud’s character rode Michele’s Rachel Berry like a horse in NYC, the ladies became BFFs in real life. When news of Monteith’s death broke, the media swarmed on Michele’s living quarters, so she quickly decamped to Hudson’s crib. Hudson took care of Michele, allowing her friends to stay and visit and even stocking her fridge with the actress’ favorite beverages.

Michele’s upcoming solo album, due out in 2014, was already completed when Monteith died. But she knew she wanted to add a song about him or she’d regret it. She turned to Sia to help write a track about Monteith. The song is ‘If You Say So,’ which were Monteith’s last words to her. How painfully tragic and beautiful.

Michele, who is glam-casual on the cover in a white top, jeans and a blingy, multi-strand gold belt, along with kohl-rimmed, sooty eyes, admitted that she thought Monteith was the most handsome man she had ever seen, and that they dated in the beginning of ‘Glee,’ but flew under the radar while doing so.

She acknowledged that people leap to conclusions since Monteith hit rehab in the spring and was dead by mid-summer. “I can only imagine what it looks like from the outside,” she mused. “It was such a short period of time when people found out, to, you know, July, but there are so many personal aspects of this whole journey that people are not invited to know. We had a full life, that had lots of different details that will be ours forever, for only us to know.”
