A little known trail in Southwest Nebraska has been named one of the nation's best hiking trails. The Bison Trial has been named of the top ten trails for a memorable spring hike by USA Today. It's listed along side such well known spots as the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park in Utah, and Kalalau Trail in Kauai, Hawaii.

Karen Berger, author of America's Great Hiking Trails, walked the trail along side Dennis Kuhnel, Director of the National Grasslands Visitors Center near Wall, South Dakota. Kuhnel says,

"I can't think of a better hike to get the most bang for your buck. It's amazing that the trail flies under the radar. It offers what Badlands National Park offers but without the crowds."

Within a mile of the Bison Trial visitor center, there's a preserved grassland region that is described as a "bird watchers paradise." Wildlife is drawn to the area by a natural spring, one of the only sources of water between the White River and Cheyenne River, which are 30 miles apart.

In her book, Berger describes the Bison Trial area as "a region of remarkable landscapes and littered with fossils." Be aware though, should you run across any fossils, don't pick them up, it's against the law. The round trip takes three to six hours to complete, depending on the hikers' ability and willingness to explore.
