SPEARFISH - The High Plains Western Heritage Center in Spearfish once again has live animals on display.

Three longhorn steers were turned out into the museum's fenced pasture last week. The Black Hills Pioneer reports that the steers named Buckwheat, Chester and Freckles are on loan from a Belle Fourche rancher.

Longhorns roamed the pasture from 1992 until the last one died in February 2011. Three bison also used to be on display, but they were removed in December because the area has become more populated and officials were concerned about safety.

Museum Director Peggy Ables says the longhorns represent the Old West and the trail drives from Texas to the High Plains.
