I did a double take when I read the headline today. According to the New York Times:

LOS ANGELES — The nation’s second-largest city voted on Tuesday to increase its minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2020 from the current $9 an hour, in what is perhaps the most significant victory so far in the national push to raise the minimum wage.

Los Angeles isn't the first to raise minimum wages either. Seattle recently passed a $15 per hour wage and San Francisco as well. New York has proposed a raise to $15.

It sounds like a lot, but here's a bit of South Dakota angle to add to the Angeles. Average rent for a 1 bedroom apt in LA is $1,800. A two bedroom apt will run you about $2,371.

Compare that to $685 for average rent here in Sioux Falls and it throws a bit of perspective into the picture. the average rent in Chamberlain, SD is $465. Average rent in Wall, SD start at $300.

Kind of makes you wonder if all the congestion and stoplights are all worth the hassle.
