Love Thy Neighbor As Thyself. Unless You Can See Their Garbage. Then, Not So Much.

Where some Sioux Falls residents place their garbage is raising quite a stink in the city limits. Now, the Sioux Falls city council will consider an ordinance that will force homeowners to keep trash bins hidden, “less inconspicuous” locations, inside the garage, or hidden from street view.

Dave McElroy, Sioux Falls Landfill supervisor, said in an interview with the Argus Leader, that his department receives several complaints from people who don’t like the sight of their neighbor’s trash bins.

The proposed ordinance has some city garbage collectors concerned saying that if their driver has to track down waste bins, it will take more time to complete the route and increased fuel usage per truck will force them to raise prices.

The proposed ordinance specifically states that “residential containers cannot be stored in front of a home or garage, expect on garbage day and garbage and recycling containers must be kept inside, beside or behind the structure or in a screened or enclosed area.”

If you would like to weigh in on the subject, the public will have a chance to address the council before the vote on July 1st, 7:00 p.m. at city hall.
