A Sioux Falls man who, police say, was visiting his former girlfriend is charged with abusing the woman's three-year-old grandson.

Information Officer Sam Clemens says the man was at the woman's home on North French Avenue around 8pm Tuesday and was in an upstairs room watching television with the child. He says at one point the woman heard a smack or spank and then some crying, but thought her ex-boyfriend had disciplined her grandson.

A short time later she told him to leave. The man didn't want to, but he got out when the woman said she would call police.

After he left, Clemens says the woman found a bruise above the child's right eye and a scratch around his neck. He says Sterling George Spotted Elk, a 50-year-old transient from Sioux Falls, was located and charged with abuse or cruelty to a minor.
