Meteorologist Jeff Chapman of the National Weather Service says Sioux Falls is about to experience the first winter storm of the season.

"This will be a major event for the area. Around the Sioux Falls area we are looking for a storm total snowfall of somewhere in the four to six inch range. It's also important to note the wind will pick up significantly, expected to gust from 40 to 50 mph."

Chapman says the storm will be preceded by rain on Thursday.

"By later in the night and especially toward the morning rush hour on Friday we will see that rain rapidly change to snow. The snow will become heavy at times later tonight and early Friday. The winds will continue during the day. But, we are looking for that snowfall to start to drop off as we get in the middle hours of Friday."

Chapman doesn't expected any major weather systems to impact the area going through the middle of next week.
