New World Record For Runner

Many of us may already be making New Year’s resolutions that might include eating healthier, exercising and getting in shape.  But it will take much more than just a New Year’s resolution to keep up with this 47-year old woman.

Ultramarathon runner  Kim Allan can now say that she is a World Record holder, after setting the record for running the most continuous hours without sleep earlier this week. It took Allan just 86 hours, 11 minutes, and 9 seconds, to complete 310 miles in Auckland, New Zealand.

Though Allan will get all the credit for breaking this woman’s World Record in a continuous run, she did get some help along the way.  Allan had runners that took shifts and ran by her side to keep her company overnight and on and off during the day.  She said

The hardest running time was between 3am and 5am, when the body clock wants to sleep.

Along the way, Allan had to deal with not only warmer temperatures, but some digestive problems (around mile number 117) and blisters that were so bad her manager was forced to cut the top part of her shoes off (above her toes) just to alleviate the pressure.

Kim Allan’s world record run wasn’t just so she could add World Record holder to her name, however.  Allan ran to raise money for the New Zealand Spinal Trust, an organization that helps people with spinal cord injuries.

The mother of four began running after she suffered a severe leg break, as a form of rehabilitation.  She now believes that she is in a position to do something for others.  Allan says

I’m hoping by doing something really different that people will be inspired to donate to a great cause.

The previous woman’s world record was held by American Pam Reed, who ran 301 miles in about 80 hours back in 2005.  Also in 2005, American Dean Karnazes ran 350 miles in 80 hours and 44 minutes without sleep.
